Longtime Grants Pass nursery closing

Grants Pass, Ore. -- A business that has been thriving in downtown Grants Pass for nearly nine decades is calling it quits.

Owner of Chet's Garden Center, Cliff Bennett, is moving to Brookings where he will open up a smaller nursery.

The establishment on Southwest H Street has been in business since 1925. Bennett said at 62 years-old he wants to downsize and move to a market with a bigger need for a garden center.

"We have a lot of competition and I think that it's saturated in this area," Bennett said. "I'm not actively trying to sell it but we would entertain. I mean we'd love to see Chet's stay here so we're open to a lot of things."

Despite the move Chet's will still donate the hanging flower baskets that decorate downtown Grants Pass. The Josephine Master Gardeners will take over Bennett's job of watering the flowers.

The inventory will be sold before they close their doors on December 24th. The new store, Chet's on the Chetco, will be near downtown Brookings and will open February 1st.
