Jacksonville, Ore. -- Search and Rescue crews from across Northern California and Southern Oregon were in Jacksonville Friday.

One Jackson County Search and Rescue K9 Unit volunteer, Marsha McBaine, has had her Bloodhound, Harley, since she was just a puppy.

Harley has two years of experience with search and rescue. Friday, she brushed up her skills alongside five other furry companions.

"It's an ongoing process. It doesn't end when they get certified," McBaine said.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department flew in master trainer, Jonni Joyce, from South Dakota for the four-day seminar. The first two days of training the teams focused on trailing by laying down a trail of cloth with a person's scent on it.

Joyce said this skill could be crucial in emergency situations.

"It's very very important because it will either save a life or bring closure to a family who's lost a loved one out in the wilderness," said Joyce.

Their noses, and love for their human counterpart, are two things that Joyce said makes these dogs perfect for the task.

The training will continue throughout the weekend with human remains detection.
