Jacksonville, Ore. -- On Tuesday morning, nearly 4,943 miles away from Valley View Winery in the Applegate, residents in Japan will be able to get a taste of Southern Oregon.
Mike Wisnovsky, co-owner of Valley View Winery, says he was recently at Costco's headquarters for a wine signing event outside of Seattle, when he was approached by the merchandiser for Costco Japan.
"He asked me if I ever wanted to do an event like this and I was like 'sure'. I actually called my brother and said I think this is kind of big," Wisnovsky recalled.
Less than 3 months later, nearly 8,000 bottles of wine are making their way across the Pacific.
"We're sending over 3 wines. We're sending our Rogue Red, our popular red blend, we're also sending over Cabernet Sauvignon and our Pinot Noir."
Wisnovsky will join the wine this week in Japan, where he'll meet with buyers and if all goes according to plan, it'll be just the first stop of many to come.
"The idea is to once you are in the system and they are famliar with the wine, you have a bit of an in, Korea, we are also looking at mexico, anywhere that we can go direct."
By going directly to retailers, they're able to keep costs low.
