Pink slips were being delivered to some 63 county employees after Josephine County voters declined a tax levy. One that would have raised property taxes to support criminal justice services for the county. Some say the levy failed because most of the voters live in city limits leaving rural residents with one public safety.
Some fear the cuts to public safety will invite criminal activity, because prosecution and jail sentences would be for only the most serious crimes. Others say they voted not to pass they tax levy out of frustration that their money would be spent unwisely. Similar tax levies have been brought to voters before and failed handily. Voters turned out at about 52 percent most likely because of this money measure. A final tally will come within the next two weeks but is said not to have any affect on the barred tax levy.
