Judge: Flashing headlights at oncoming car OK

Medford, Ore. -- If you flash your high-beam headlights to warn drivers about a speed trap, you are not breaking the law.

The ruling came from Jackson County Justice Court Judge Joe Charter.

The case involved a driver on Highway 140 who was being followed by an officer.

He flashed his lights at an on-coming car and was ticketed for improper use of his headlights.

The driver fought the ticket saying it was free speech and not an attempt to blind the other driver.

The judge agreed saying it was similar to the way truckers use their lights to signal that it is safe to change lanes.
