UPDATE: Medford Police investigating officer involved shooting

Update (11:04 p.m. 8/24): Medford Police have identified the suspect involved in the officer involved shooting as 52 year-old Stephen Andrew McMilon. 

Update (9:54 p.m. 8/24): In a Sunday evening press conference Medford Police said officers responded to reports of a man walking southbound on Cherry Street toward Stewart Avenue with a shotgun and acting strangely came in at 4:25 Sunday afternoon.

Officers arrived on scene within minutes. Police said the man, a 52 year-old Medford resident, fired at least one round from his shotgun at an officer who was on the corner of Stewart Avenue and Cherry Street.

Police said that's when two officers fired back and hit the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

Four officers were involved. They are now on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

Police are still investigating how many shots were fired total, but said the man was well armed. Besides his shotgun he also had two other firearms in his possession. One was a handgun.

Police said this isn't the first encounter they've had with the suspect. They believe they had contact with him just before 3:00 Sunday afternoon when they responded to a disturbance call on the 100 block of Chestnut Street. No arrests were made.

Multiple agencies are working the case with Oregon State Police leading the investigation. Medford Police were with initial responders. Now the investigation includes the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Central Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department, and the District Attorney's Office. The Major Assault Death Investigations unit was also on scene.

Once the investigation is complete it will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office. It will then go before a grand jury.

Update (6:32pm 8/24):We have been able to confirm that one person has died as a result of the shooting.

Medford, Ore. -- The Medford Police Department is currently investigating an officer involved shooting in west Medford.

According to the Medford Police Facebook page officers were involved in a shooting on Cherry Street near Stewart Ave at around 4:25pm Sunday evening.

The only other information provided is that the officers were uninjured.

Very little information is being released at this time, but we expect more detailed information from a 7:30pm press conference.
