Peddlers & Vendors Face Challenges

, Written by Travis Koch, Posted: Wed, July 18 2012 at 6:15 PM, Updated: Thu, July 19 2012 at 2:43 PM

Brick and mortar businesses in Grants Pass are challenging a city ordinance to make it more fair between restaurants and food vendors.

City officials say the law is outdated and needs to be revised. To peddle goods within city limits, one would nee to purchase a permit , which is about $20 dollars. Before that the city would inspect the unit where good would be sold that costs $5.00 and then if it's approved the only other costs are up to the vendor.

Businesses who have established themselves inside a building are upset with the rules because during the lunch hour, people who shop at the vendor sites take up parking. While Brick and mortar businesses pay property taxes for their establishment, vendors are not required to.

Street vendors say they too want the rules to be fair, and options are being thought up but in the meantime, city officials will not approve anymore vendor licenses until the kinks are worked out. The licenses that all expire on December 31st.
