A California man is believed to have drown somewhere between Indian Mary Park and Hog Creek in Galice after jumping into the Rogue River to save his dog.

Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday the couple left their camp at Ennis Riffle. After renting a raft they set in possibly at Hog Creek. Their white Scottish Terrier leaped out of the raft somewhere near Hellgate Canyon and the man jumped in. Without a life vest police say he's likely caught in an under current.

Dive teams were reluctant to search that part of the river because of the strong water flows and debris. A helicopter that was one of the first responders had to make an emergency landing at Hog Creek Boat Ramp because of mechanical issues and has been grounded since. The dog and the mans wife made it out. He is still missing. Police will not release their names until next of kin have been notified.
