Wednesday is opening day for the brand new south Medford Walmart.

The store is located near the intersection of Highway 99 and Garfield.

It took several years of fighting for the store to open.

A number of residents didn't want Walmart to take up the land and the case eventually landed up in the hands of the Supreme Court.

The opening of the new store coincides with the closing of the Talent Walmart next week.

The north Medford Walmart will also shut down but go into a much needed renovation and reopen next year.

Officials say that the new store's 375 employees will be employed from both other Walmart's.

A ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 7:30 am with the store officially opening at 8 am.

A number of Medford residents with the groups 'Jobs with Justice' and Medford residents against Walmart plan on protesting the opening of the store August evening.

According to protest organizers the group is calling on Walmart to "stop its cycle of impoverishing communities and encourage shoppers to choose local alternative to Walmart."

The group says they want to bring attention to the negative impacts of Walmart on the local economy and change the way the retailer treats employees.

The rally is set to get underway around 5 pm and is scheduled to last about an hour.
