Oregon Senator Ron Wyden has placed a hold on a controversial intelligence bill.
Wyden blocked the foreign intelligence surveillance act on Monday, which would have been extended for another 5 years.
The bill is a surveillance law used by the Obama administration to intercept the communications of terrorist suspects overseas.
Under the act, citizens could have their personal information and communications analyzed by the government.
Wyden is asking that the government first obtain a warrant to review information about the US citizen in question.
