Ashland residents raise thousands to fight illegal dog trade

Ashland, Ore. -- Dr. Jeff Rinkhoff and Janis Rosenthal from Ashland have raised more than $20,000 for the Soi Dog Foundation. This money will fund a rescue shelter for dogs in Buriram, Thailand where it’s estimated that about 200,000 dogs are taken and sold to restaurants in Vietnam.

Rosenthal was inspired by a CNN story about the illegal dog trade and immediately wrote a letter to friends and family asking them to donate to the cause. Donations poured in from Rosenthal's requests to family, friends and generous community members.

The GreaterGood.org and Animal Rescue Site will be matching the $20,000 donation to go towards building and maintaining this dog shelter. The GreaterGood.org has already raised enough money to build two shelters through the Animal Rescue Site and with Rosenthal's donation they will be able to build a third. Each shelter houses around 500 rescue dogs.
