ASHLAND, Ore. --Tuesday night's vote from the Ashland City Council will make it easier for medical marijuana dispensaries to open in march.

Before the vote, the city would not issue a business license to any business engaged in "unlawful activity."

Council members decided to take  the word 'unlawful' out of the code because it will make it easier for city employees once people start applying for licenses to open dispensaries.

They said legality will be a decision for law enforcement not city hall.

Medical marijuana users and potential dispensary owners showed their support at the meeting.

"I have terminal cancer and I really want free access. You know I want something that's safe, something where I don't have to worry. I'm looking to opening up my own dispensary so that I have the ability to put one out there the way I see it," said Bill Ericson.

The Ashland planning committee also presented a map that shows where dispensaries will be allowed to set up.

Dispensaries will not be legal within 1,000  feet of schools. They will be allowed in certain business and residential areas but the city is recommending against setting up in downtown.

Businesses can apply for licenses in March.
