Eagle Point, Ore. -- Bryce Thornton, a senior at Eagle Point High school is being awarded a rare scholarship. Making him one step closer to his dream.

The 18-year-old will be going to Oregon State University with a full ride scholarship worth $180,000. It's coming from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. Thornton said only 10 students in the nation receive this scholarship.

For the past five years Thornton has been helping other Marines and soldiers over seas by sending 3,500 care packages. And now he said he's happy to be getting some help back.

"I've wanted to go to OSU now for a couple of years and I want to go for mechanical engineering."

Thornton is one of 29,000 applicants and said all of his hard work paid off.

"Everything I've done in 4-H and school, and scouts, and I know that there are lots of other candidates that are qualified but they felt that I was just a little bit better then the rest."

His selfless deeds, in the end, leading him closer to his own dreams.

Thornton said he'll be in the ROTC program for four years and graduate will with a degree in mechanical engineering. Then he'll serve six years in the Marines.
