Foul fowl behind salmonella outbreak

Today we're learning more about a new outbreak of salmonella. Nearly 300 people have become sick...Foul fowl is behind a widespread salmonella outbreak. "Its a very serious situation," comments shopper Angela Javarone.

The US Department of Agriculture reports: Foster Farms raw chicken is likely behind 300 people in 18 states getting sick -- that has Javarone using caution ."You don't want anyone in your family, friends to go though that."

There's been 40 cases in Oregon, most in California."It's a bacteria, so were the conditions not clean?" questions Javarone. "It makes you wonder about that."

So far health officials have been unable to tie the illness to a specific product... there's also been no recalls.
The bacteria causes severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
But not everyone is scarred and squawking. Salmonella can be killed -- if poultry is cooked to 165 degrees.

"Foster Farms is a good name," says Central Point resident Barbara Peters. "It's just a known thing to handle it well, keep it clean, and cook it thoroughly."

For Javarone the news serves the same reminder: "It's probably a good idea to go out and buy a meat thermometer." Practice proper safety, so you don't cook your own goose ...and get sick.

USDA officials did say the products bear one of three establishment numbers inside. The numbers are P-6-1-3-7... P-6-1-3-7-a... and P-7-6-3-2
