Josephine County is looking at privatizing the animal shelter located in Merlin. Because of a failed tax levy voted down in May, cuts to spending and the lack of pet owners licensing their animals, funding has been in short supply. By privatizing the shelter and adoptions, county officials and others believe people would be more likely to help. Also in May, the community expressed outrage when county officials announced they might euthanize dogs after three days and exclude cats from the shelter entirely. That's when the idea to give up the shelter to a private entity became serious. County Commissioner, Simon Hare says it's possible that the humane society could take over along with FOTAS and PAWS. The county is in the process of taking proposals. Josephine County will still control animal protection services which is mandatory by county charter.
