Local skier living out Olympic dreams

Laurenne Ross grew up watching the Olympic games. Now the Klamath Union High School graduate and Bend resident is living out her dream by competing in them.

Ross is in Sochi as a part of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. She said she's still trying to embrace it all.

"It's absolutely insane. It's kind of surreal," Ross said.

The dream of an Olympic athlete is unfolding right before her eyes, and it all started with the opening ceremonies.

"Marching through there, walking in, was just really special," Ross said. "It was so cool to be a part of the team and to meet all the other sports and the other athletes. It was just an awesome experience."

She competed Monday in the women's super combined. During the downhill portion her binding came loose and she crashed. But she says she won't let that get in the way of her next race.

"It's always tough when something happens that's a little out of your control, but I'm just going to take confidence from the section I skied above my fall and head into the next training run in the downhill with a better mindset," Ross said.

That mindset, she said, has been tough to find. Ross said she's trying to stay relaxed and treat it like any other race, but the pressure is on.

"It's clearly different. It's hard to convince yourself that it's just another race when your whole environment is just completely warped," she said.

Ross will compete Wednesday in the women's downhill race.
