In as little as two years, the Evergreen Parking Garage could look a whole lot different with new corporate offices, retail stores and restaurants. That's according to Medford city officials who say it's possible if a new plan is approved.
"Basically it'll be a four story building made up of offices on the second, third, and fourth floors. The first floor will probably be a combination of offices, retail and restaurants," said Dick Gordon, who is Chairman of the Medford Urban Renewal Agency and a councilman on the Medford City Council.
The plan is for the new structure to wrap around the parking garage's three concrete slabs, taking up roughly 100,000 square feet.
"The plan seems cool," began Medford resident, Richard Hawkins.
"I hope this one is more local," he said.
And it is more local this time around. Back in 2008 the Bella Vita project funded by outside investors fell through. This proposed project will be headed up by Pacific Retirement Services, Rogue Disposal and Recycling, and Procare Software. All of them are local companies.
"These three corporations are putting up nine-million dollars," said Gordon.
He said the Medford Urban Renewal Agency has offered to contribute two-million dollars and according to Gordon, the project is just one chapter in the book of downtown revitalization which includes the Lithia building, RCC and revamping city parks.
"This chapter brings construction jobs, initially about 200 permanent jobs to the structure here with the potential of going up to 400 someday," Gordon said.
And Gordon said if the plan passes, he hopes business will spill across the street to empty storefronts like the ones that line the streets in the downtown area.
It's been four years since the last plan for the Evergreen parking structure fell through, but now with the plan vote set for Thursday, it looks like this time it could be the real deal.
