If you've ever wondered about growing your own garden, you may want to consider flowers that help out with wildfires.

The Grants Pass Firewise community program has finished planting a garden full of flowers and plants that are fire safe.

The goal is to teach people about planting flowers and plants that are less prone to catch on fire, 90 percent of homes are lost to wildfire activity coming from embers.

"That also makes our job easier so when we show up we're not dealing with highly flamable vegetation, this way we can keep them, their house, and us safe too."

Delong  says residents are welcome to call the Firewise program at 541 450-6200 for any questions.

The garden is located at the Hillcrest Public Safety station and is always open to the community.
