High tech trash cans. That's exactly what the city of Salem is about the get.
The Salem Parks Department purchased 33 solar powered trash compactors last year.
Each cost roughly $4,000.
City officials say they used federal stimulus money to help cover the cost of the trash cans and the installation.
The compactor holds up to five times the amount of trash as traditional cans.
They also are equipt with a sensor that alerts the city when they're full.
City officials plan to study how much savings the new cans will cost and if successful will purchase more for the entire city.
