A standoff in Brookings this weekend lasted 12 hours and sent one man to the hospital.

The Curry County Sheriff's Office said six homes were evacuated and part of Highway 101 was closed Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Lieutenant John Ward said it all started as a sexual assault investigation involving 42-year-old Lorenzo King from Alaska.

Ward said when officers went to the residence King was staying at on Heather Lane to serve a search warrant the man barricaded himself in a room and threatened to kill anyone who came in.

That's when Oregon State Police brought in a Special Weapons Team, with members traveling in from four hours away.

Ward said after several hours and unsuccessful attempts to get King out of the room with rounds of gas canisters the SWAT team stormed in and tazed the man several times.

When King was finally detained he was found to be suffering from self-inflicted wounds which caused a large amount of blood loss.

King was air lifted to Bay Area Hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. Ward said he is now in the Curry County Jail facing charges from the sexual assault investigation and resisting arrest.

The Curry County Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation.
