A physicist in southern California successfully fought a $400 traffic ticket, but it's how he did it that's attracting attention.

U.C. San Diego physicist, Dmitri Krioukov wrote a four-page paper explaining the ticket he got for failing to completely stop at a stop sign defies physics.

He says he was able to show what the officer who issued him the ticket saw only made it seem like he didn't stop.

"My argument in the court went as follows: That what he saw would be easily confused by the angle of speed of this hypothetical object that failed to stop at the stop sign," said Kriokov.

"And therefore what he saw did not properly reflect reality, which was completely different."

Officials in California say this way of disputing a ticket is something they have never seen before.
