Austin, Texas. -- (NBC News) A drunk driver on the run from police drove into a crowd of people at Austin's South-By-Southwest Festival overnight, killing at least two and injuring more 20.
A man and a woman died and 23 others were injured — five of them critically — when the gray Toyota sedan plowed through a barricade close to The Mohawk just after 12:30 a.m. local time.
Police say they had initially pulled the driver over a few blocks from the scene of the carnage, but he sped off racing the wrong way down a one-way street, then turning onto another street which was closed for concerts and parties.
"I seen two bodies up in the air. I seen one up on the windshield and one on the grill of the car," one witness said, "And I just looked at him and at that point on he never stopped and he just kept hitting bodies, you could just see them flying like bowling ball pins."
Police were finally able to stop the suspect when he jumped from his wrecked car and tried to run.
