Tropical Storm Isaac is reaching near hurricane status.
Early Tuesday morning, Isaac's winds were at 70 miles per hour, just 4 miles per hour less than a category one hurricane.
Isaac is on path to directly pass over the city of New Orleans later on Tuesday, just one day shy of the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu says that the city is now prepared after ten billion dollars in improvements to the city's levee system.
Thousands of people have evacuated as a precaution along the entire Gulf coast.
Nearly two dozen Oregon Red Cross disaster volunteers have been deployed to the Gulf Coast as part of a nationwide response to help those under the warnings of Isaac.
Three of those volunteers are from the Medford area and have flown to help in Florida and Alabama.
Other volunteers from around the state have also headed to those
Volunteers will help run shelters, provide meals, and distribute relief supplies.
