Jackson County, Ore. -- Wind, hot temperatures, and dry vegetation are all the ingredients to fuel wildfires. But those conditions are something we don't normally see in the month of May here in the Rogue Valley. Fire Chief Darin Welburn of Jackson County Fire District 5 said of a fire that broke out in Ashland Monday "it's awful early for a fire of this size and to burn like they are."

The 13-acre blaze came inches away from a home. But thanks to the quick firefighting effort and the work of the homeowners their home was saved.  Chief Welburn said that all homeowners should take this as a warning. "You're running out of time to do those things right now, so if you haven't been out cutting brush, getting that defensible space around your residence it's not too late to complete that."

Fire officials said some Medford residents got quite the scare when a man mowing his lawn hit a rock sparking a small grass fire on Memorial Day.

Mya Sutherland of Medford said "we saw a big puff of smoke and it got really cloudy, my house is right behind that, so it's pretty close." That fire was quickly contained before any major damage was done.

Fire officials said this is just a sneak peek of what's to come this fire season. Chief Welburn said "just a good indication of how dry things are already, the fire carried pretty fast through these fields.

The cause of the Pompadour fire is still under investigation. Chief Welburn said that it is still open fire season, but they will be evaluating the fire season in the next few days and more than likely restrictions will be starting sooner than normal.
