Medford, Ore. -- Millions of people in Oregon and California will be hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend in search of fun, but beware. Medford Police say they expect thieves will be looking for empty homes to burglarize.

According to Lieutenant Mike Budreau with the Medford Police Department, so far this year, burglaries are up 27%.

Budreau said there are some things people can do to protect their homes and property if they plan on being out of town.

"You want to make your home look occupied and you can make it look that way a couple ways. You can leave a light on, perhaps on a timer inside. You leave an exterior light on," suggested Budreau.

Budreau also said not to let newspapers pile up on the front porch.

If you're staying in town, call police if you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood.
