MEDFORD, Ore. – An Oregon mom who last year was ordered to give up custody of her 4-year-old son but went on the run with him instead was arrested on Thursday, the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office said.
Michelle Lee Chandler, 31, faces charges of custodial interference and contempt.
Chandler was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Pacific NW Violent Offender Task Force at a home in the Medford area.
A Yamhill County court ordered Chandler to give up custody of her then-4-year-old son and return the boy to his father, Charles Norris, in August of 2013. Instead, Chandler took off with her son, according to the sheriff's office.
After several local searches, Norris filed a missing person report in April 2014. He told the sheriff's office he hadn't seen his son since June 2013.
The sheriff's office asked for help from the U.S. Marshals Service after several searches for the boy came up empty.
Investigators eventually found Chandler and her three children at a home just outside of Medford. U.S. Marshals arrested Chandler and took her to the Jackson County Jail. Her three kids, ages 5, 8 and 11, were placed in protective custody and will be reunited with other family members, deputies said.
