Medford Residents React to College Tuition Bill

, Posted: Sun, February 24 2013 at 9:18 PM, Updated: Mon, February 25 2013 at 1:41 PM

Medford residents are reacting to the Oregon House's vote to extend resident college tuition rates to some young illegal immigrants. On Friday the measure passed by a vote of 38-18 and will now be passed on to the Senate. Some residents say the vote is a step in the right direction.

"This is America, everyone should have a chance to be successful and do what they can," said Chawntae Eslama.

If passed by the state Senate the measure would permit students to qualify for in-state tuition at the Oregon's seven public universities if they've attended an Oregon high school for at least three years and lived in the US for at least five. The students would be subject to the same entrance requirements as other applicants.
