Salem, Ore. -- (OPB) Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown is warning people who've used her agency's hacked website (http://sos.oregon.gov/), to reset their password -- especially if they use that same password for other sites.
The website shut down two weeks ago.
The agency says so far the investigation indicates no sensitive personal information was compromised as it doesn't store complete credit card numbers, and private companies handle credit card transactions.
Secretary of State spokesman, Tony Green, says it's not known whether the attackers collected passwords, but the agency has deleted them as a security precaution.
"We're telling people that if they used the same password that they use with the Secretary of State's office, for another account, that they should change it," said Green.
Security experts recommend not using the same password for different accounts.
The Secretary of State has told the Oregon Legislature that she'll be asking for money to help fix the website. It's not clear when it will be fully functional again.
