Ashland taking steps to control bold wildlife

Ashland, Ore., — The city of Ashland is known for having wildlife all over town, but some worry it’s gone too far. Now the city is taking steps to try and keep the animals from becoming even more bold.

After Mayor John Stromberg held a “deer summit” in September, city officials voted to put new signs up warning citizens about feeding the wildlife.

If you’re caught feeding wild animals around town, you have the potential to get a $435 fine.

One resident, Paula Wiiken says, “if they are feeding the deer, I think they should be warned not to because we don’t need them in our gardens and in our yards all the time.”

City officials aren’t presenting the signs as solutions. Last September when Mayor John Stromberg held the “deer summit”it was to discuss how residents would like to see city address their fearless deer population.

Management Analyst, Ann Seltzer says, “this is just the first step in helping people understand that feeding the wildlife is prohibited.”

The signs were put up just last week. Fines will be enforced by a complaint system and will first come with a warning.
