12 people killed during Iraqi protests over the weekend

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Anti-government protesters were on the streets of Baghdad again Monday even after 12 people were killed during demonstrations across the country over the weekend.

Iraqi security forces used tear gas to try and disperse protesters in central Baghdad as protesters threw Molotov cocktails at police.

For months, Iraq has been gripped by protests critical of alleged corruption, high unemployment and Iranian influence in Iraq’s politics.

The protests continued even though a prominent Shiite cleric withdrew his support over the weekend.

On Monday, representatives of 16 countries, including the U.S., condemned the excessive violence of the Iraqi security forces.

at Least 500 protesters have been killed since the demonstrations began in October.
