41 elk die after falling through ice in eastern Oregon

Baker County, Ore. — 41 elk were killed after they fell through a layer of ice covering the Brownlee Reservoir in Baker County, Oregon.

The Baker City Herald reports the incident happened around 9:00 a.m. on December 27.

The elk were crossing the reservoir when the ice broke in four places, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Baker City office.

ODFW officials said they drove to the area so see if they could save any elk or salvage meat, but they were unsuccessful.
