Amateur California prospector finds 18 oz. gold nugget

nc_hugenugget0908_1500x845Tuolumne County, Calif. (NBC News) — A prospector in Central California is celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime find, a huge gold nugget that weighs as much as a T-bone steak.

Oscar Espinoza of Modesto was panning near the little town of Jamestown when he made the discovery.

The nugget weighs about 18 ounces and is estimated to be worth as much as $70,000.

Folks in Jamestown believe the find could spur a modern day gold rush.
