Ashland youth push for climate ordinance

Ashland, Ore. — A group of Ashland youth want their city’s Climate and Energy Action Plan something that Ashland has to follow.

Ashland Youth Climate Action held a press conference and rally before tonight’s council meeting. They want the city to adopt an ordinance to make the goals of the Climate and Energy Action Plan legally binding.

“It’s basically an accountability mechanism to ensure the plan gets implemented because there’s not really any wiggle room for us to do what’s pragmatic or politically expedient,” explained Issac Bevers with Ashland Youth Climate Action

Councilors voted to implement the action plan at Tuesday’s meeting.

The two main goals of the plan are to reduce reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city and to prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts.
