Attempted kidnapping suspect arrested in N. California

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. – An attempted kidnapping suspect is now behind bars in Yreka.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said on August 15, they received a report of a young woman who was grabbed by a man driving a black Jeep station wagon in the Seiad Valley Area. The man allegedly tried to force the woman inside the Jeep, but she escaped.

The responding deputy was able to identify a person of interest in the case because he knew of a man matching the description provided by the victim and witnesses.

After an investigation, 53-year-old Damon Wayne McCartney was arrested for attempted kidnapping and battery in connection with the attempted kidnapping.

Sheriff Jon Lopey said, “We are grateful the victim, in this case, was not more seriously harmed by the alleged suspect in this case. Deputy Garrison and the assisting CHP officer did a good job responding to what could have been a very tragic and dangerous situation for the victim involved in this incident. Their actions and the leads they developed, with the assistance of the victim, witness, and reporting parties were instrumental in developing the probable cause leading to Mr. McCartney’s arrest for the attempted kidnapping and battery offenses perpetrated against the young, vulnerable victim.”

The case is still under investigation and anyone with more information is asked to call 530-841-2900.
