Jefferson County, Ore. – A crash south of Madras claimed three lives on Tuesday afternoon.

Oregon State Police said the crash occurred on Highway 97 near milepost 100 at around 2:10.

According to OSP, a van was traveling northbound on the highway when it stopped to make a left turn. An unknown vehicle traveling behind the van narrowly missed the vehicle by swerving and passing it on the right shoulder of the highway.

Another vehicle that was also traveling northbound could not avoid the van and rear ended it, forcing the van into the southbound lane of travel where it collided with a car.

The driver of the van, Madras resident Anita J. Bemrose, was transported to the hospital and died from her injuries. A 10-year-old boy was taken to a Bend hospital with life threatening injuries. Two other passengers of the van, a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year old boy, were pronounced dead on scene. The two boys were sons of the deceased driver.

The driver of the oncoming vehicle and the vehicle that rear-ended the van were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injures.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
