Central Point murder suspect appears in court

Medford, Ore. — The man charged with murder appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.

Robert Kahlil Davies-Calhoun was arrested Monday. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said he shot and killed 53-year-old Douglas Mitchell Spaur. It happened outside the Stop N’ Go on Table Rock Road in Central Point just around 9:30 a.m.

Davies-Calhoun was wanted on two outstanding misdemeanor warrants, but is now also facing murder charges. He pleaded not guilty to those misdemeanor charges Tuesday, but did not enter a plea on the murder charge. Besides the misdemeanors and murder charge he has no prior criminal record. He’s being held without bail in the Jackson County Jail.

The family of the victim declined to talk, but neighbor Brian Coy said he’s shocked by the tragic news.

“Sometimes my dad would hike Table Rock with him so to hear what happened to him is really sad. Everyone liked him so I don’t really know why this would happen,” Brian Coy said.

Coy described Spaur as a nice and friendly man who took care of his elderly father and liked to ride his bike around the neighborhood. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has not released any details into the reason behind the shooting or whether the two men knew each other.
