Dallas sniper targets police

NC_dallas11_1500x845Dallas, Texas (NBC News) — 12 officers were shot and five killed in Dallas after a sniper targeted police at a peaceful protest Thursday night.

Now investigators are learning more about the suspect’s motive.

The ambush-style attack happened near the end of the rally protesting recent police involved shootings, when a sniper perched in an elevated position opened fire on police.

Police immediately rushed toward the gunfire and cornered the gunman.

“You see video footage of them running toward gunfire from an elevated position with no chance to protect themselves and put themselves in harms way to make sure citizens could get to a place of security,” Dallas Police Chief David Brown said Friday.

After a lengthy standoff, police used a controlled explosive to kill the suspect.

The gunman told police he acted alone and was angered by recent police shootings.
