DEQ: Sewage released into Rogue River tributary

0721 sewage pipeCentral Point, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is warning people to avoid Kane Creek due to sewage being released into the waterway. The creek is a tributary to the Rogue River.

The Oregon DEQ said they received a complaint on Thursday about sewage being pumped into the creek from Dardanelle RV Park, on the 9500 block of Old Stage Road in Central Point, just south of the city of Gold Hill.

An inspector discovered sewage from a broken pipe was being pumped into a storm drain leading directly into Kane Creek. It was not clear how much sewage had been pumped into the creek.

DEQ said they ordered the park manager to stop pumping the sewage into the drain and to repair the broken pipe. As of Thursday afternoon, sewage was no longer being pumped, but the pipe had not yet repaired.

According to the DEQ, employees are collecting water samples from the creek to determine the level of contamination. Signs have been posted notifying the public about the sewage leak.
