Deschutes Co. D.A. seeks death penalty against Edwin Lara

0824 Edwin LaraBend, Ore. — The man accused of killing a Bend woman and then continuing a crime spree into Siskiyou County was indicted in federal court.

Edwin Lara is accused of killing 23-year-old Kaylee Sawyer at Central Oregon Community College in July.

He then allegedly kidnapped an Oregon woman and drove south to California where police say he shot an elderly man before being arrested.

Lara was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday, November 16th on carjacking, kidnapping and other charges.

Bend NBC affiliate KTVZ reports the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office will seek the death penalty against Lara. “This decision was reached after considering the facts of the case, the input of Kaylee’s family, the input of law enforcement, and most importantly, the requirements of the law,” said D.A. John Hummel.

Lara is scheduled to go to trial in Deschutes County for Sawyer’s murder next October.
