Eight Southern Oregonians headed to see Pope Francis

Medford, Ore.– 50 Oregonians are headed to Washington D.C. to see Pope Francis. Eight of them are from Southern Oregon.

Oregon Representative Greg Walden notified people through a news letter and on his website back in August that his office would be choosing people to join him on the trip.

Pope Francis is scheduled to give address Congress on Thursday at 10AM. Ruth Hewitt from Eagle Point is very excited about the opportunity.  She said,  “I’m very encouraged by this Pope because some of the philosophies of the Catholic church that have been stagnant for so long, it’s nice to see that the church is getting in touch with what our society is like today.”

Her husband Nick is going with her and said he surprised his wife with the tickets to see the Pope.

Garret West is also going. He was born and raised in Medford and is now studying law at Georgetown University. He said, “I’m very excited to see Pope Francis. He’s definitely a humanizing person who has brought a lot of liberalization to the church.”

In a statement Representative Walden said in part, “The first time a Pope has ever visited the Capitol and addressed congress, will be historic for our nation.”
