Firefighter’s home burns down

Klamath River, Calif. — Nine homes have burned in the Gap Fire in northern California, and one of which belongs to a local firefighter.

Denice Edgar is a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service. She lives in Klamath River, but all month long, she’d been busy fighting the Sobranes fire in central California.

She never would have expected her own home would burn down in a wildfire.

“This is the front of the walkway, this would have been the front of the house,” Edgar said.

She has lived on her rural Klamath River property with her two friends for several years. The house that was once a place of comfort, burned down in just minutes on Sunday.

“That we don’t have our porch that we sat on everyday and laughed. We just can’t come home because there isn’t anything left,” Edgar said.

The firefighter saw the flames coming and tried to take action.

“Tried to water stuff down, but at that point it was too late,” she said.

Though Edgar was able to save a few items before they evacuated, the house is a total loss.

“Everything that was in my bedroom is down here now,” she said.

The veteran firefighter has fought fires across California for more than a decade, and it’s making her believe in her career now more than ever.

“I’m proud of what I do. I’m happy we could save anybody else’s house even though i wasn’t out here doing it,” she said.

Edgar said the women have plans to rebuild their home and also said they have no intentions to move.
