Firework safety tips and reminders

White City, Ore.– If you plan to buy your own fireworks this 4th of July holiday, local fire officials want to remind you of the rules.

Within Medford city limits fireworks are only legal between June 23rd and July 6th.  Areas that are always off limits to fireworks are the Bear Creek Greenway, city parks, and public schools.  Be sure to keep fireworks away from the wildfire risk area.  That’s east of North Foothills and North Phoenix and north of Cherry Lane.

Officials will be out watching for unsafe firework activity and also illegal devices.

“Anything that travels more than 6 feet horizontally or 12 inches vertically, anything that is actually moving or anything that travels into the air or explodes,” are considered illegal says Medford Fire and Rescue Fire Inspector Tanner Fairrington.

A few steps to keep in mind this 4th July:

-Never try to re-light a dud.  If it doesn’t go off let it sit then submerge it in water before disposing of it.

-Always have a bucket of water nearby.

-Make sure you aren’t lighting your fireworks near a structure or anything combustible.

-Keep kids at a safe distance.
