Former Deschutes Co. Sheriff Captain released from jail

0229 Scott BeardBend, Ore. — A former Deschutes County Sheriff’s Captain who is accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the county is out of jail.

Bend NBC affiliate KTVZ reports Scott Beard was released Friday after being arrested on February 19th on theft and money-laundering charges. Beard oversaw the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team.

Prosecutors say Beard spent much of the stolen money on a former sheriff’s office employee, with whom they say Beard was having an affair.

Beard pleaded not guilty last Monday. He could face more than 10 years in prison if convicted.
