Gingerbread Jubilee

11-20-gingerbreadMedford, Ore., — “It just blows my mind to think how creative they can get, and the fact that things have to be edible.”

Ann Lowe has been volunteering at the Gingerbread Jubilee for the last four years.

She says being a “house sitter” is something she looks forward to every holiday season — and never gets sick of it.

“I tell my kids, don’t plan anything for the weekend of the jubilee because I’m not gonna be available!”

The jubilee isn’t just a fun sight for visitors, it’s also the biggest fundraiser for the Craterian Theater.

“The houses sell for lots of money, and it goes towards helping us run the theater and it’s a terrific thing.” said Eric Strahl, the theater’s communications manager.

All the gingerbread creations are auctioned off, some going for thousands of dollars, before being put on display for the public.

“We have around a thousand people come through a day, we kind of think of it as the unofficial kick off for the holidays.” said Strahl.

And while the houses look good enough to eat…

“Make sure everybody looks with their eyes, and not with their hands.” said Lowe.

“I always threaten to eat them when they come in, but I don’t judge them. They’re all fantastic.” said Strahl.

The jubilee is open again tomorrow from 10 am to 6 pm.
