‘Golden Spike’ commemoration ceremony

Ashland, Ore. — The historic ‘Golden Spike’ was commemorated on Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Golden Spike is a ceremonial spike built on Central Pacific’s North-South railroad line, and completed their part of the railroad that crossed the United States.

Local experts said events like these are meant to not only celebrate the railroad, but to celebrate the power of history as well.

“Once you forget in history, you’re destined to have to relearn. and you don’t want to throw away the important things. so that’s what we do,” Taylor Leonard said, Ashland Historic Commission.

The spike was driven into the ground on Dec. 17, 1887 connecting Oregon and California for the first time, according to the Ashland Historic Commission.
