Grants Pass dog scheduled to be euthanized after attack on horse

Grants Pass, Ore. — A woman taking care of a Grants Pass pit bull is hoping to save its life.

She says the county wants to euthanize the dog after it attacked a horse.

Grants Pass resident Leah Harp who takes care of the dog says before the recent attack, she’s never seen the dog hurt any animals or humans.

“Our children are crying. It’s not just a dog to us… it’s a family member,” Harp said.

She is trying to save Kron.

He’s a 2-year-old pit bull that’s currently housed in the Josephine County Animal Shelter and is set to be euthanized for attacking a horse.

“A mark across the horses mussel,” Harp said as she explained what the dog did to the horse.

Kron somehow escaped her yard and found his way onto the neighbor’s property.

Harp says he doesn’t have any history of animal or human attacks in the past, but she thinks he was afraid.

“He’s never seen a horse. He was raised in a city. Animals just like people are scared of things they don’t know and haven’t been raised around,” Harp said.

At a public hearing Tuesday, Harp says Josephine County Commissioners voted 2 to 1 for Kron to be euthanized.

She says the reasoning is the county could be liable if Kron attacked a child.

But Harp doesn’t understand why other options in the ORS code can’t be explored like containing the dog at all times, leashing the dog from the house to an enclosure, or moving him to a new home.

After the results of the hearing, Harp isn’t giving up.

She plans to file a petition.

“If you want to send him to death, meet him first. See if he’s aggressive,” Harp said.

They plan to give us more information on the case tomorrow.
