Grants Pass fire crews get “burn to learn” training

BURN TO LEARN PICGrants Pass, Ore. — Fire crews in grants pass got some hands on experience Saturday, during a “burn to learn” training exercise.

A house on the 2000 block of SW G street was donated by the owner for the training. Crews spent most of the morning in the house, watching how the fire spread through the structure, as well as doing drills and teamwork exercises.

“As the day progresses, they start fires in different rooms, and different teams go in and put it out,” Jes Webb said, a PIO for Rural Metro Fire Department. “They never fully let the house burn, until they feel that structurally it’s not sound anymore.”

When the training was finished, crews burned the house completely to the ground. A number of onlookers came out to watch the house burn.
