Grants Pass schools to be protected by “school marshals”

0513 Grants Pass school marshalsGrants Pass, Ore. – The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety has announced that on Monday, District 7 schools will be protected by “school marshals”.

Police said the marshals will “have the authority and tools to stop any threat.” NBC5 News previously reported that the marshals would be armed.

Officers said the program will be staffed by retired police officers who are still certified in Oregon and employed by GPDPS.

According to police, utilizing retired officers presents significant cost savings compared to hiring full time officers who would receive health and retirement benefits.

GPDPS said the plain-clothes school marshals will operate anonymously, much in the same way as air marshals.
