Half a day of delays on busy Interstate 5

Ashland, Ore — For more than 12 hours southbound Interstate 5 was a parking lot between Ashland and the California-Oregon border.

“I’ve driven through Donner and back east and stuff but I’ve never seen a freeway closed more than 12 hours, this has got to be a first,” said veteran trucker, Ray Lopez.

Blizzard conditions near the Siskiyou Summit put a halt to Kathleen Rollins’ travel plans, she was on her way home to California before a 12-hour delay.

“I’ve seen roads shut down before, but not 12, and not knowing when we’re going to be able to go through,” said Rollins.

Hundreds of cars and trucks, bumper to bumper until crews gave the all clear, half a day after closing the highway.

Not a moment too soon, thanks to Oregon Department of Transportation road crews and Oregon State Police.

“They’re doing a good job, stay safe,” said Rollins.

“Not bad being paid to sit here but nothing like being at home,” said Lopez.
