Half-a-million hoverboards recalled

NC_hoverboards0706_1500x845(NBC News) — More than 500,000 hoverboards have been recalled due to a risk of overheating and exploding.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says ten companies are recalling 501,000 hoverboards sold across the country because of lithium-ion batteries that pose a risk of overheating and exploding.

At least 99 incidents of overheated battery packs have been reported to the CPSC, including some with burn injuries and property damage.

“This is indicative of improper design, improper manufacturing and I would actually say, irresponsible sales,” CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye said Wednesday.

The hoverboards were sold nationwide and online retailers from June 2015 through May 2016 for between $350 and $900.
